Pssst…wanna’ visit a regular school that…
…does a stellar job with both boys and girls? When school reopens plot a trip to Frankford Elementary School, located on the wrong side of Delaware’s famed Bethany Beach. (Maybe you stopped there once for gas or a Slurpee on the way to the waves. Probably didn’t leave an impression).
This performance comes from a dowdy elementary school (the principal’s bathroom reeks of mold) that serves children whose parents pluck your chickens, clean your vacation homes and bottle your pickles.
And yet, somehow, Frankford either holds its own with the nearby wealthy elementary schools or outdoes them (believe me, smiles all around when that happens). Take a look at these soon-to-be-officially-released tests scores. Notice something unusual? Frankford takes little boys who enter school reading behind the girls and by fifth grade the boys are reading better than the girls. Trust me, that doesn’t happen often. Now look at the math scores — a leveling in just the opposite direction.
The story of how they do this is inspiring and already captured in the book It’s Being Done, written by former Postie Karin Chenoweth. I won’t spoil the plot, but the strategy is roughly akin to what KIPP does: Vow that no child will slip behind, find a reading program that will work for that individual child and then scrounge for the extra time to make everything come together. There’s more, such as building a world-class tutoring program drawing on retired Bethany Beach folks, but I’m starting to spoil the plot. Read Karin’s book.
