In college, writing rules, which partly explains…

why men struggle in college more than women. This Chronicle of Higher Education article describes new research showing the strong predictive power of the new SAT writing exam.

Since the revamped SAT made its debut in 2005, admissions officials have eagerly awaited research on the test’s predictive value. This summer has brought a stack of it.

In the latest, a study by researchers at the University of Georgia has found that the new writing section is a much better predictor of academic success than the test’s critical-reading and mathematics sections.

This should not be surprising. Writing, along with the ability to quickly and accurately absorb assigned readings, is the currency of any college experience, regardless of the eventual major chosen by a student. When the first SAT writing results were released in 2006 a clear gender gap favoring women was apparent.

Women score roughly 11 points higher on the new writing test, which is especially significant because average SAT scores favor men (far more poor and minority women than men take the test, which lowers the overall average for women).

All this adds up to a familiar refrain you’ll hear on this blog. The world has gotten more verbal (some level of college is now required for many jobs that once required only a high school diploma) but boys haven’t.
