Mentoring boys ….
Here’s an example of a mentoring program in Arkansas aimed at boys:
This year, at Reagan Elementary School, several students will benefit from adult mentors. The Fayetteville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has started a B.O.Y.S. (Building Outstanding Young Scholars) Program to mentor third grade boys. The mission of the program is to reach young boys while their interest in school is still fresh and vibrant. They seek to teach the boys to find alternative ways to deal with problems and issues and concentrate on their future. The fraternity members and children enjoy reading and working with each other. Additionally, the mentors eat lunch with their mentees and enjoy recess time where they talk, play and spend time together.

Are you aware of any articles/studies that outline the developmental importance for adolescents (particularly males) to be involved in single gender outings (ie., Boy Scout camp outs, hunting trips, sports–or female shopping/spa trips). As a BSA scoutmaster, I am receiving alot of push-back from moms who insist on going on campouts. I agree moms can be acceptable role models on campouts; however, they are missing the point that there are times when guys just need to be with other guys…or when guys treat differently the guys who must always have their ‘mommies’ around.
Thanks for your comments.
