If you don’t know Daniel Willingham, you should

Greg Toppo interviews Willingham  about his latest book. The University of Virginia researcher is an excellent source on what works in the classroom — and doesn’t work — for all students, including boys. And he’s a great contact for sorting out myth from reality on gender learning differences.

With regard to this interview, I think a key is the attitude of education with regard to this question: Are you trying to sift through everyone to find the potential Nobel Prize winners and educate them like mad, or are you trying to educate everyone? No Child Left Behind is about trying to educate everyone, but I don’t think our heart is really in it. The results are like in sports. There are a few great athletes like Lebron James and Tiger Woods. But while tens of thousands watch them live and millions on TV, they are the ones in great shape and the mass of the country is contributing to the ever increasing percentages of the obese.
