Baruti Kafele is definitely an inspirational person. His passion and focus are great to see. But how do you replicate that on a large scale? He talks about teachers and principals working to understand all of their African American male students. But in middle and high school, where teachers have 150 students in multiple classes, it is difficult for them to do, even if they are so inclined. I know that, in New York, for instance, there has been some move towards K-8 schools. Would the primary model work at higher grades? Would it help to stop the terrible results that have been cited in Chicago and Detroit? Would teachers get to know their vulnerable African American male students better in the ways that Baruti Kafele talks about, and help them to succeed? But more to the point, I just wish there was some way to clone Baruti Kafele a few thousand times. It would have to have an impact.
