A good primer from Sandra Stotsky…

…on where we stand on high school skills.  She doesn’t break it out by gender here, but Sandra would the first to point to severe literacy skills deficits among males.

This is an interesting phenomenon, especially here in New York State, where every graduate is supposed to have to pass five Regents exams which are supposed to certify that they know how to read, write, and do basic math among other things. Yet there are the remedial courses. So what can be done about it? I think this is the key paragraph: “On the other hand, it is not clear that most teachers believe that most students are capable of doing authentic college-level work. A survey by Civic Enterprises in June 2009 found that less than one-third of teachers believe that “schools should expect all students to meet high academic standards and to graduate with the skills to do college-level work, and provide extra support to struggling students to help them meet those standards.” Less than one-third. Extrapolate that out to millions of teachers, 80% of whom are women, and you can see how difficult it will be to have teachers really try to work to deal with the problem of this need for remediation, not to mention the more general problems regarding the educational achievement levels of boys.

And yet, college is the new high school, so it has to be done.
